Chapter 7

Doc

Peter

“Everyone keeps taking off? Is it me?” Peter teased after Bobby and Dee left their group. “I promise I showered today. Samantha and I both took time to shower at the hospital before coming.”

“I’m sure it’s not you. You know, the world doesn’t revolve around you,” Izzy jabbed him in the ribcage.

“Watch where you put your finger.” Peter took her hand and held it. “Ox, what’s going on with you these days?”

“You know, these men,” Ox motioned around the room, “keep me busy with their comings and goings. I tagged along with the team to Mexico to avenge Griff’s murder. Rider’s been using me for odd jobs here and there.”

“Where is Rider tonight? Staying out of trouble, I hope.” Peter inquired after their good friend.

“He’s launching his new private security business soon, officially. He’s been taking small jobs for a few months now, getting the word out and building a brand. I think he’s in Washington state with

Teagan and Luca taking care of all of the paperwork and financial aspects.”

“Is Rider planning on leaving Valhalla?” Izzy asked.

Peter knew Rider was one of her favorites among the Valhalla men. She couldn’t help telling them all how they could take after Rider and his manners a little bit more.

“Nah. He’s setting up shop here. Of course, if he takes any of the jobs himself, he won’t be home. The security firm itself will be headquartered in Colorado. He’s opening a couple of other offices, as well. Taking full advantage of his veteran loan benefits. I think the idea is to have offices representing each region of the country. He’s in talks with three brothers who were all special forces to run the East Coast and Midwest offices.”

“Three brothers in special forces? I feel bad for their mother. That’s a lot of worry,” Izzy shook her head. “I hope any children we have stay far away from the military. No offense to you all,” she threw her hands up to keep Ox and Peter from interrupting her, “I am grateful for every man and woman who defends our country. I would prefer not to be worried about whether my child is going to come home alive or in one piece.”

“Understandable. My mom wasn’t exactly thrilled when I told her I was joining up. Besides, I imagine with two doctors for parents, your children won’t stand a chance but to follow in your footsteps.”

“One could only hope,” Izzy smiled.

“There’s been an awful lot of talk about babies, lately. Is there something you need to tell me?” Peter gazed intently at Izzy.

“What? No, I’m not pregnant. I’d like to be married before we talk about pregnancy,” Izzy reassured him.

Peter was surprised to feel his heart sink a little as Izzy's words sunk in. He’d been hoping—perhaps even expecting—to hear she was carrying his child, she’d brought the topic up several times in the past couple of weeks.

The idea of starting a family with Izzy had been on his mind for months, ever since her thirty-fifth birthday when her father asked if they were ever going to give him grandchildren.
